Huskies Double

Barry Huskies started the new year with a double header away at reigning champions Swansea Storm and at home to the experienced and physical South Wales Police.

The away game was potentially one of the Huskies' toughest games of the season, made worse by the fact that they travelled with a smaller squad than usual due to work commitments. However, the team started brightly, Ian Gibbons and Lloyd Roberts scoring the majority of the Huskies' early points with outstanding outside shooting. This was matched by the Storms' American forward who seemed to score easily around the basket despite some physical defence from Chris Gibbons and young Sean Maudesley. The first quarter ended all square, 21 apiece. Jack Dyer provided a spark from the bench at the beginning of the second quarter, his speed up the court providing all sorts of problems for the Storm's bigger players. He scored 6 quick points, but the Storms' American kept them in the game. The half ended with the Storm leading 43-40.

The second quarter started with Roberts continuing his fine scoring run, only to be matched by the American and the Storm's Welsh International guard, the Storm ended the third quarter with a 64-58 lead. The fourth quarter started with an ejection for the Storm's Welsh International guard for an unsportsmanlike foul on Chris Gibbons. The Huskies took the game to the Storm, pulling to within 4 points with 2 minutes to go thanks to some aggressive inside play from Stuart Peters. However, the Storm's Iranian shooter came off the bench to singlehandedly win the game for the Storm with some outstanding 3 point shooting. The game ended 78-71.

Next up was a game against bottom of the league South Wales Police, an experienced side that has been together for over 20 years. However, father time has caught up with this ageing team and they proved no match for the young Huskies team. Dyer ran all night and scored at ease ending with 28 points, whilst Roberts dictated the huskies' play scoring a game high 33 points. The Huskies were able to blood some new players with Dafydd Morse, Rhys Swinfen  and Francisco Ontoso getting extended minutes. The Huskies' defence shut down the Police's stuttering offence, resulting in a 92-64 Huskies win.

Coach Trigg said after both games: "We've played well in all our games this year and the games we've lost have only been by a few points. We have started recruiting already for next season with 3 new players waiting in the wings. We need them too, as we have such a small squad that we struggle with with work commitments on times. But I can't fault the players' commitment and if we continue like this we should finish in third or fourth place this year, which would be quite an achievement".

The Huskies train Sundays 1100am-100pm at Holm View and Tuesday's 800pm-1000pm at Barry Leisure Centre. For further information contact Alun Rees on 02920 531531, our facebook page Barry Huskies Basketball Club or www.barryhuskies.net.
